About

Graham Duthie

Designer Maker, Hot Metal Code.

I see going back to metal work as part of an old journey made new.  When I studied it, I loved it, but was too full of youth and lacking in experience to apply myself fully to it.

When I came back to it twenty years later, everything came easily. I’d retained the curiosity, the enjoyment of the bizarre, and the enthusiasm for making, but it was as if the intervening years had provided a structure and focus for these forces.

My process for design and learning was much improved. I was quickly able to make things that I had only previously dreamed of.
I am truly grateful to my customers for enabling me to continue on this journey.
Rule 01: Handmade, unique, unusual.
Components are made by me in my workshop in Antwerp using metal sheet, wire and grain as raw materials. *
*Excepting clasps and other small findings.

Rule 02: Limited editions
Limited editions, where viable, will have their own web page.
Larger editions will be individually photographed.
Non-edition work will be specified.

Rule 03: Environmentally...honest.
I use Argentium silver by preference, which is made from recycled silver. I live a low impact, low wattage, bike first life. But I am pragmatic. I have a nuclear power station on my doorstep. I think it is cool.

Why have rules?

The rules of the Hot Metal Code define the way that I work. These first three are the founding principles of a code that promises only what is currently achievable. In the future the code will grow to represent all that it was named as a code for, including:
The ultimate wearable Hot Metal Code.
Use of Made by Fun packaging.

Support for local retailers.
'Are you local?' blog post coming soon.
The use of bespoke alloys.
'From Fire to Sheet and wire' blog post coming soon.
As you can see from the rules above hot:metal:code would like to build its business by forging relationships with local retailers.

Especially retailers who are a good fit for the brand and have the resources to give customers the level of service that hot:metal:code wants to be associated with.

Of course I would love to hear from anyone interested in my jewellery but at this extremely busy time please make contact via the hot:metal:code Facebook page.

Contact from retailers is my current priority and I'd love to hear from you via the form below.
